ORA-01996: GRANT failed: password file ” is full

I needed to assign the DBA privilege to a user and came across the error:

ORA-01996: GRANT failed: password file '' is full

SQL> GRANT SYSDBA TO HRSDBA
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01996: GRANT failed: password file '' is full

The error is due to the entries option that is used to create the password file.
*For security, make a copy of the old password file.

$ mv orapworcl orapworcl_old
$ orapwd file=orapworcl  password=oracle entries=10

After increasing the entries parameter , log on again and try granting the privilege again.

SQL> GRANT SYSDBA TO HRSDBA;

Grant succeeded.
